WHAT IS A RUBRIC AND HOW DO WE USE IT?
A rubric is a scoring strategy considered an authentic assessment that lists criteria for student work such as a term paper that may include purpose, organization, supporting details, readiness, etc. It also provides levels of quality for each criteria. Typically, the levels of quality range from 0-4 or 0-5.

Rubrics are effective strategies for teaching and assessment. It allows teachers to monitor student progress and demonstrate target behaviors. Additionally, rubrics may be used to teach students to critique and adjust their performance. Rubrics are an efficient strategy that reduces the time required by teachers to assess students.

Rubrics are a useful tool to evaluate our students in regard to curricular expectations. The following is recommended to transfer rubric scores to letter grades. If a rubric has four student outcomes and four criteria levels, the maximum points earned is 16. For example, if a student scored 12 points out of a possible 16 points the student would receive a 75%. The following is the scale for connecting rubric scores to letter grades:

89%-100% = A
75%-88% = B
62%-74% = C
50%-61% = D
0%-50% = F

You will find a number of rubrics on this page that may meet your instructional and assessment needs. However, the following are guidelines if you need to develop rubrics for your classes:

  1. Describe the student objective(s) addressed by the task
  2. Identify the qualities students need to demonstrate to be considered criteria at a mastery level
  3. Identify the criteria for the lowest level of qualities
  4. Identify the criteria for the middle level qualities
  5. Typically, four to five criteria are used from 1-5. Each criteria should reflect clear descriptions of student outcomes

Finally, rubrics enable teachers to set differential expectations for students based on the same task. In sum, I highly recommend rubrics to assess students on a regular basis, i.e. end of unit assessment.
